KA Lite 0.16 released!

--

We’ve been ramping up development of our newest project, Kolibri, which will do everything that KA Lite does, and much more! As a result, KA Lite 0.16 will be our last major release. We’ll continue to have minor releases for bugfixes and updates of Khan Academy content, but our team will mostly be focused on making Kolibri a reality. Want to contribute to its development? Join our development community!

After months of work, hundreds of commits, PRs, and squashed bugs, we proudly present KA Lite version 0.16, the final major release of our flagship project! Because most of our development work has been in the backend, it won’t look like much has changed upon first glance. But things are gleaming underneath the surface. Check out our newest features:

“Show me how!” Inline Help

Inline help in the form of help text will allow users to understand the explained section or feature.

Look out for the “Show me how!” button on certain pages.
A guide will walk you through what you can do on that page.

Revamped OS X installer and El Capitan support

Mac users: rejoice! Based on user feedback, we have overhauled our OS X installation process to be as seamless and consistent as ever. We’re also now compatible with El Capitan, the latest version of OS X. Take a look at the new OS X installer GUI:

Introducing the Content Pack

For KA Lite v0.16, language packs will no longer be updated. Instead, both language packs and the assessment zip file have been combined into one pack, called the content pack. Because content is pre-generated and stored into the database, the KA Lite server has less work to do at startup.

The bottom line? You get a blazingly fast startup time and less memory usage.

New content packs come with faster performance times. KA Lite is now more efficient, with no loss in functionality. No matter how many languages and videos are on your machine, KA Lite now starts up in 10 seconds or less!

The latest content from Khan Academy

As always, we pull the latest content from Khan Academy’s vast reservoir of educational resources to ensure that each release has the most complete collection of videos possible. After adding in the new videos and exercises, the full set of content contains 8,065 videos and 25,000 quiz questions.

Want to join our community?

Without participation from the open-source community, KA Lite would not be where it is today. We’ve revamped our documentation to ensure that everyone can seamlessly join our project.

Want to join? Start here:

  • Download the latest release today, to install or upgrade!
  • See a bug? Don’t hesitate to file an issue on GitHub!
  • As always, we love to hear stories and experiences from our users. Find the nearest KA Lite deployment near you through the map, or help us fill it out by contacting us or filling out the form!

Releasing KA Lite introduced us to many awe-inspiring users around the world. Because of you, we look towards the future. We’re building the best technology platform for enabling learning experiences in off-the-beaten-path classrooms. Help us get there with Kolibri.
